Transit and transitions

Growing up in suburban New Jersey, our goal was to get a driver’s license, a car and drive to work to pay for the car, upkeep and insurance. After 17 and that magic piece of paper, everything else would fall into place.

It was rare in my old neighborhood that anyone actually took a bus to get to work. When my older sister worked as a keypunch operator at Mutual Benefit in Newark she walked out to the avenue to catch the bus to the Newark City Subway. That was the early 1960s as the first wave of Baby Boomers joined the workforce.
