The In Our Old Kitchen, Photography by Anthony Buccino saga began in August just few weeks after the dust had settled from our bathroom remodel when we ordered new cabinets for our old kitchen renovation. 

By October, it was time to empty the old shelves and cabinets to make way for demolition and the unveiling of old timbers, old wires, clogged plumbing, found covered-up windows, and lots of dirt and dust.

Here in the bowels of our woodwork we discovered the obscure and we found shiny things and sharp things in drawers, cabinets and behind boxes we hadn't seen in thirty years. While our new cabinets are supposed to be larger and roomier, there's no sense in hanging on to these old and forgotten items that have lost their glisten.

The great purge swept away utensils and whatnots we hadn't seen it or used it since God knows when, it was time to donate them to the needy. Well, right after we have a bit of fun with our cameras, drop cloth, and lightbox. We have here one last long look at items that will never be seen again in person. It was a fun little project. Enjoy.

  You won’t need to take a spaceship to Ashtabula to catch a glimpse of GAS STATIONS: Photography by Anthony Buccino. It's as simple as browsing through this oversize book of gas pumps, service stations, and a few odds and ends.

Why photos of gas stations? We’ll, why not? Until we started curating this collection, we had no idea we already had so many service station pictures from as far back as 1970s and through the past fifteen years.

With a street photographer's eye looking for the unfamiliar in the same old place, we think we've captured a cross section of what you've seen and what you missed in this 150+ photo collection.

So, when you're feeling a tad nostalgic for the good old gas stations and recalling the days when fuel was under four dollars a gallon, you could pull in with an empty tank, say Fill 'er up, and check the oil, GAS STATIONS will fit your mood when you're under the hood.

GAS STATIONS is part of Buccino's 2022 Dozen series, a goal to publish one photo collection each month for a year, this year. Many of New Jersey photographer Anthony Buccino's photos have earned awards in area competitions.

Gas Stations Photography by Anthony Buccino is dedicated to pump jockeys, auto mechanics, tire changers, managers, foremen, test drivers, tool salesmen, tool makers, body shops, car painters, and highway flotsam and jetsam such as nails, screws and other implements of puncture. 

And gas station owners, entrepreneurs, auto parts suppliers, neon sign makers, fuel haulers, tank truck drivers with CDL endorsements, pipeline maintainers, oil drillers, rich oil company CEOs, DMV inspectors, division of weights and measures, EPA, motorcycle cops, speed traps, black/white units, dead dinosaurs, and ancient space aliens. And, as always, to my wife Dawn who always encourages me to have fun with my photography.

A township resident for more than four decades, Mr. Buccino has written five Nutley-based books. Born in Belleville, the Nutley resident spent 12 years editing business news copy at Dow Jones & Co. and The Wall Street Journal professional web pages. He worked for several years as an associate editor at TheStreet.com. Earlier he served as editor of The Belleville Times, and managing editor of Nutley Journal, Belleville Post, Glen Ridge Paper and Independent Press of Bloomfield.

Anthony has written in online publications about life and growing up in northern New Jersey. For five years he wrote about commuting and transit in metro New York-New Jersey. Lately, he spends time improving his camera eye and researching his next Nutley book. Anthony has presented at the Library in the past, most recently for his book, "Nutley Notables, Vol. 2."

NUTLEY, NJ - As news of the passing of Nutley Matriach Ruth Bedford spread through the community, residents immediately shared their memories of her and her philantrophy. Nutley author Anthony Buccio took from his day to share his thoughts on Bedford, as well has a page from his book Nutley Notables.

 

"Mrs. Ruth Bedford was a sweet soul and treated everyone equally." said Buccino. "She'd share her stories of working for W.T. Grant or open her home for many local fund raisers. While her stately home reflected her wealth, her open heart reflected her love for Nutley and all of its people. I raise a lollipop in her honor." he added.

Historian Anthony Buccino will meet with the Nutley Old Guard at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 14, to discuss his dad's letters home from the South Pacific during World War Two.

WW2 Letters Home from the South Pacific by Angelo Buccino is one GI’s view of the war amid the heat, bugs, carnage and noise in an artillery battalion supporting First Marine Division at Guadalcanal and other islands that never get mentioned.

Buccino wrote these long-lost letters to his best friend back in the states asking about the old gang. They turned up nearly sixty years after they were mailed, censored, read by his buddy and then found again in a forgotten footlocker in his old friend’s attic.

Hear the whole story of their discovery, the words of a young man far from home, and why they were published in November 2018.

The Old Guard of N.J., Nutley Chapter No. 7, meets weekly on Friday at 9 a.m. at the Frank A. Cocchiola Parks Building, 44 Park Avenue, Nutley, NJ.

Buccino will add background to 100 year old parade film

Nutley 1918 - First Memorial Day Parade

Nutley author Anthony Buccino will provide home front and overseas background on WWI

NUTLEY, NJ -- Mayor Dr. Joseph P. Scarpelli and the Board of Commissioners announced plans for the Township’s 100th Anniversary Memorial Day Parade.  The parade will be held on Monday, May 27, 2019.

Weather permitting, the Nutley War Memorials Remembrance Ceremony will start at 7:30 am at the VFW Post 493.  Following the Remembrance Ceremony, the Township will gather to honor Nutley’s fallen firefighters at the Public Safety Building at 10:30 am.  

The Memorial Day Parade opening ceremonies and welcome will begin at 11 am at the Park Oval.

The parade route is the same as previous years – Chestnut Street to Passaic Avenue to Centre Street to Franklin Avenue, with the reviewing stage in front of JHW Middle School.  Rev. Jill Fenske will offer the prayer at the opening ceremonies and this year’s Grand Marshall is Edward Joseph Bennett.

“The Memorial Day Parade serves as a tribute to honor all of our U.S. service men and women who selflessly and valiantly gave their lives to protect our freedom and liberty,” said Mayor Scarpelli.

THURSDAY FILM PREMIER

The 100th Anniversary Memorial Weekend activities begin with the showing of  the 1918 Memorial Day Parade movie at 7 p.m. on Thursday May 23, at the Nutley Public Library.  

“Nutley 1918” is the earliest known motion picture shot in Nutley.  The film’s director and producer as one of America’s first female filmmakers, Katherine Russell Bleecker.

In addition to playing the film at the library NutleyHistorian John Demmer will provided insight into the making of the film.  Nutley author Anthony Buccino will provide home front and overseas background on WWI, which ended in November of 1918.

“Nutley 1918” was found in 1960 after having been buried in an abandoned barn.

Following its discovery, the former Nutley township historian at the time, Ann Troy, sought out its restoration, and gave the decomposed film stock to Bob Lee, president of the Essex Film Club.

“This film is a part of our history.  Viewing what most likely is Nutley’s first Memorial Day Parade on the week of our 100th parade is so fitting,” said the Mayor.

HISTORIC WALK IN THE PARK ON MONDAY

Also on Monday May 27th the Nutley Historical Society will sponsor “A Walk in the Park”.  The tour, led by Nutley Museum director John Simko, begins at 9 a.m. at the Mud Hole (near the intersection of Passaic Avenue and Vreeland Avenue) and travels along the Third River.  

Simko will discuss the river’s role in Nutley’s history as a source for early industry, as inspiration for world-renowned artists, as a symbol of civic pride, as an important boundary marker, and as a fitting memorial to our war veterans.

Visit the sites of three former mills, tour the pre-Revolutionary War Van Giesen homestead, find out why the Third River splits in two, learn about the beginnings of our hundred-year-old Carnegie Library and even older Town Hall, and walk through one of Nutley’s oldest cemeteries.  

“A Walk in the Park” ends at eleven o’clock inside Nutley’s first brick schoolhouse (now the Nutley Historical Society and Museum) where refreshments will be served. The museum will be open and tour-related pieces from our archives will be on display.

“A Walk in the Park” is free, but is limited to 30 people and requires registration.  You can register for the tour by emailing johnsimko1014@gmail.com or by calling 973-752-8984 and leaving a message with your phone number or e-mail address.  You will receive confirmation via e-mail or a phone call.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE ON MONDAY

The Nutley Board of Commissioners will be inviting family members of soldiers, both past and present, to march in the parade, and is collecting names of those in our community who are currently serving.  These names will be added to an already existing banner which will proudly be carried throughout the parade, and then displayed on the Nutley Park Oval fence outside of the Town Hall.  

Special thanks to the Patriots Club for placing American Flags on the veteran’s gravestones at the cemeteries in town and to Nutley High School’s students and faculty for their Wall of Honor which salutes our fallen heroes.

“Memorial Day is a day we put aside to honor our fallen heroes and pray that no heroes will ever again have to make the ultimate sacrifice protecting our nation,” concluded Scarpelli.

NUTLEY, N.J. -- Leaving his keyboard and camera for a brisk morning walk, local author Anthony Buccino will lead the Walk & Talk through Nutley parks on Sunday, 8:15 a.m., Aug. 12, 2018.

Enjoy a refreshing three-mile round-trip walk from the pre-opening Nutley Farmers Market through Nutley parks along the Third River to Kingsland Park and back.

A Nutley resident for four decades, Buccino and will talk at brief intervals about Nutley history, the Nutley Sons honored throughout the Memorial Parks, Nutley notables, the Kingsland Manor, the Vreeland House, and growing up near these parks in the good old days he’s written about in several of his books.

Folks who want to only walk are encouraged to do so at the risk of missing out on historic tidbits.

The author has published his fifth book about town, Nutley Snapshots In Plain View, volume one of nearly 200 photos around the township. His other books include Nutley Notables, Nutley Sons Honor Roll, Belleville and Nutley in the Civil War and Yountakah Country. Copies are available online. Bring along your copies of his book for him to sign at the end of the walk.

Formed in 2008, GreeNutley is the Township of Nutley’s Go Green Committee comprised of the Mayor and Board of Commissioners, representatives from all five township departments and community members. The committee is currently under the auspices of Commissioner Dr. Joseph P. Scarpelli and the Department of Public Works.

Through education, events, and activities, Greenutley is raising awareness of the importance of green choices in our everyday lives and providing simple, effective ways for each of us to contribute to the sustainability of our community and our planet, including saving energy, recycling and reducing waste, eating local/organic food, and reducing pollution.

When Patch recently asked our readers for stories about hometown heroes, Pennie Landry, co-founder of the Nutley Homeowners Community Facebook page, was quick to name Buccino.

The Nutley resident and Belleville native keeps the history of both communities alive on social media and in books he authors, Landry wrote.

UN Garden Restoration in Nutley, NJ

Last summer, preparing for his guided walk through Nutley parks, Anthony Buccino was again reminded of the efforts put in several years back by an eager Eagle Scout candidate and his friends, family, and other volunteers.

Buccino recounts Tyler Huey's efforts toward his Eagle Scout project and the the way the UN Garden in Nutley was cleared, cleaned and restored ... for a while, anyway:

NUTLEY, N.J. -- Leaving his keyboard and camera for a brisk morning walk, local author Anthony Buccino will lead the Walk and Talk through Nutley parks on Sunday, 8:30 a.m., Aug. 20, 2017. 

Enjoy a refreshing three-mile roundtrip walk from the pre-opening Nutley Farmers Market, Municipal Parking Lot 1, William St. and Franklin Ave., through Nutley parks along the Third River to Kingsland Park and back. 

A Nutley resident for four decades, Buccino and will talk at brief intervals about Nutley history, the Nutley Sons honored throughout the Memorial Parks, Nutley notables, the Kingsland Manor, the Vreeland House, and growing up near these parks in the good old days he’s written about in several of his books. Folks who want to only walk are encouraged to do so at the risk of missing out on historic tidbits. 

The author has just published his fifth book about town, Nutley Snapshots In Plain View, volume one of nearly 200 photos around the township. His other books include Nutley Notables, Nutley Sons Honor Roll, Belleville and Nutley in the Civil War and Yountakah Country. Copies are available online. Bring along your copies of his book for him to sign at the end of the walk.

Formed in 2008, Greenutley is the Township of Nutley’s Go Green Committee comprised of the Mayor and Board of Commissioners, representatives from all five township departments and community members. The committee is currently under the auspices of Commissioner Dr. Joseph P. Scarpelli and the Department of Public Works. 

Through education, events, and activities, Greenutley is raising awareness of the importance of green choices in our everyday lives and providing simple, effective ways for each of us to contribute to the sustainability of our community and our planet, including saving energy, recycling and reducing waste, eating local/organic food, and reducing pollution.

Revised Edition - Belleville and Nutley in the Civil War

Cherry Blossom Press announces the revision of Belleville and Nutley in the Civil War - a Brief History by Anthony Buccino.

The 2017 revision is noted by a new cover on the paperback edition and extended biographies of some soldiers along with notes on famous Civil War veterans buried in Belleville's oldest cemeteries.

The book is a compilation of information documenting the participation of the New Jersey towns of Belleville and Nutley in the American Civil War. 

The text includes information on six local soldiers - three from Belleville and three from Nutley - killed in action in the War Between the States, plus information on the battle campaigns in which they gave their lives. 

Additional information in this brief history includes local participation in various New Jersey and other state militias.

1.    Belleville Sons Honor Roll
The project that began more than 15 years ago, to identify and remember the fallen soldiers from Belleville, N.J., is having long-term effects.

In the past 13 months, Belleville has dedicated thirteen street signs to fallen soldiers from the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Vietnam War and the Cold War.

If we look back at 1999, the Belleville Memorial had a partial list of the lost soldiers, sailors and Marines lost in service. In 2005, using the names of the fallen discovered in my research, the town added more than 150 names, where there had been none, to its Belleville Veterans Memorial on Union Avenue.

The research continues as we learn more information about these Belleville Sons from their families as we prepare to dedicate street signs in their memory.

2.    Nutley Sons Honor Roll
Don’t tell anyone yet, but we are continuing in our effort to work with the powers-that-be in Nutley to dedicate streets signs for the 140 fallen Nutley Sons.

3.    Book Projects
You may be aware Anthony is juggling three book projects. One project is Nutley Notables Volume 2.
Another project involves research into murder, mayhem and major crime in a typical north Jersey town.
And the third book is that Mosquito Man book simmering on a back burner.

4.    Other Stuff
Anthony continues to shoot photographs around town during his walks. There’s a Facebook page for that.

He also created a Facebook group for Nutleyphotos, old and new. He also moderates Belleville and Nutley groups.

Anthony also maintains the websites and Facebook groups for Kingsland Manor and the Nutley Historical Society.
