NUTLEY SNAPSHOTS - In Plain View

During the summer Anthony Buccino completed his second photo book, NUTLEY SNAPSHOTS In Plain View. Volume one in a series of photo collections to showcase the all-around beauty and some of the history of the northern New Jersey township of Nutley. This book is available only in print. Nutley Snapshots is Buccino’s sixth Nutley book.

Walk and Talk with the Author

Anthony Buccino led the successful Walk & Talk through Nutley parks in July. Nearly two dozen walkers joined him for a refreshing walk from the pre-opening Nutley Farmers Market through Nutley parks along the Third River to Kingsland Park and back while Anthony discussed Nutley history, the Nutley Sons Honor Roll, and growing up near these parks in the 1960s. Many of the views along the walk revisit photos in NUTLEY SNAPSHOTS.

Did you know Buccino created and maintained web sites for Nutley Historical Society and the Kingsland Manor for more than a dozen years? That helped him talk history on the Walk and Talk.

Belleville Sons Honor Roll

July wrapped up our individual sign dedications to the Belleville servicemen who died while in service. We had great turnouts from family and friends of these soldiers and sailor: Edward J. Zuczek; Raymond DeLuca; Giavanni Bocchino; Nicholas Del Grosso; and Frank H. Metzler. At these events, many family members present additional information, news clippings and family photos of the servicemen. We try to include this new information when we update our Belleville Sons web site and the print and ebook editions Belleville Sons Honor Roll.

The Belleville and Nutley sons began more than 15 years ago, to identify and remember the fallen soldiers from Belleville and Nutley, N.J., is having long-term effects. In nearly two years, Belleville has dedicated more than two dozen street signs to fallen soldiers from the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Vietnam War and the Cold War. Our thanks for all their help and support with the dedications go out to Belleville Historical Society President Michael Perrone, the group’s members, local veterans groups, Belleville Councilman Kevin Kennedy and Belleville Board of Ed trustee Tom Grolimond.

Book Projects

Earlier this summer, Anthony Buccino issued the print edition of Jersey City Snapshots. The ebook was first published in 2012.

Anthony is juggling book projects. Besides updating both Sons books, research continues on Nutley Notables Volume 2, the follow up to Nutley Notables. Another secret project involves research into murder, mayhem and major crime in a safe Jersey town. And, in the meantime, Buccino is curating photos for Snapshots volume two.

Social Media

Anthony continues to shoot photographs around town during his walks and on field trips. There’s a Facebook page for that, where he’s posted more than 1,000 photos in the past year. He also created a Facebook group for Nutley photos, old and new. He also is the admin at You Know You’re From Belleville and You Know You’re From Nutley and other groups.

2.   Walk and Talk with the Author

Sunday, 8:30 a.m., Aug. 20, 2017 – Anthony will lead the Walk & Talk through Nutley parks. 

Enjoy a refreshing walk from the pre-opening Nutley Farmers Market through Nutley parks along the Third River to Kingsland Park and back while Anthony discusses Nutley history, the Nutley Sons Honor Roll, and growing up near these parks in the 1960s and the good old days he’s written about in Greetings From Belleville, and his other books. Bring along your copies for him to sign. Some books will be available for purchase on site.

The project that began more than 15 years ago, to identify and remember the fallen soldiers from Belleville, N.J., is having long-term effects. In the past 13 months, Belleville has dedicated 21 street signs to fallen soldiers from the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Vietnam War and the Cold War.

In 1999, the Belleville Liberty war memorial had a partial list of soldiers, sailors and Marines lost in service. In 2005, using the names of the fallen discovered in Buccino’s research, the town added more than 150 names, where there had been none, to its Belleville Veterans Memorial on Union Avenue.

Our research continues as we learn more information about these Belleville Sons from their families as we prepare to dedicate street signs in their memory. We have been using digitized military records, where available to enhance information on our web site and in updated print editions of Belleville Sons Honor Roll – Remembering the Men Who Paid for Our Freedom.

Additionally, Belleville street signs dedicated to honor the sacrifice of three town police officers and a fire captain killed in the line of duty were unveiled in November.

2.    Nutley Sons Honor Roll

Don’t tell anyone yet, but we are continuing in our effort to work with the powers-that-be in Nutley to dedicate streets signs for the 140 fallen Nutley Sons.  These signs would be based on research for Nutley Sons Honor Roll – Remembering the Men Who Paid for Our Freedom.

Where has the summer gone?

It's been a while since we've posted any activity here. That doesn't mean we haven't been busy. Author Anthony Buccino has been delving knee-deep and more into research for his upcoming book on murder, mayhem and major crimes in a small north Jersey town to be named later. 

Meanwhile, Buccino has been working since last September with Belleville Town Councilman Kevin Kennedy and Tom Grolimond to identify the addresses, locate family members and dedicate street signs to the Belleville Sons who paid for our freedom. 

Streets have been dedicated in honor of Henry Benson, Arthur Burke, Frank Cancelliere, Roger Crowell, Richard Hayes, John Hoar, Glenn Nelson, Albert E. Pole,  Donald Saunders, and John Verian.

In 2006, Buccino urged the Belleville council to name streets in the Essex Park development in honor of fallen Belleville sons. Streets were renamed in honor of named for Raymond De Luca, Carmine Olivo, Clatie Cunningham Jr. and William Hamilton. No formal ceremony was held within the gated community.

Further street dedications scheduled include Michael Flynn in September and Donald Murray in October.

Buccino has also begun to post photos from his vast archive on to a new Facebook page called, are you ready? Photography by Anthony Buccino. The photos are all over the block, literally and figuratively as he has shot choice photos while walking around his block and selected photos from his archives including daily commutes into the city, views of Jersey City and other travels here and there. 

Belleville Renames Street for Fallen Vietnam War Hero

Pfc. John Hoar

The township of Belleville, N.J. honored Pfc. John Hoar by renaming Cleveland Street at Dow Street as Pfc. John Hoar Way. Hoar was 20 years old when he was killed in action in Vietnam on Feb. 13, 1966.  

Anthony Buccino made brief comments about Pfc. Hoar who was the second young man from Belleville to die in Vietnam. Both young men were killed in action that week. Helder DaSilva was KIA on Feb. 7, 1966.

In September 2015, High Street at Van Houten Place was named in honor of Pfc. Donald Saunders who was killed in Vietnam May 12, 1969.

In 2006, seven street names in the new residential development at Essex Park on Franklin Avenue were renamed to honor veterans and four of the Belleville heroes who died while in service. Streets were named for Raymond De Luca, Carmine Olivo, Clatie Cunningham Jr. and William Hamilton.

Much of the information leading to the stories of the young men from Belleville, N.J., who perished while in service was gathered from and/or inspired by the Belleville Sons Honor Roll project begun in 2002. 

That project led to the publication of Belleville Sons Honor Roll - Remembering the Men Who Paid for Our Freedom written and edited by Anthony Buccino with Andrea Buccino.

Buccino helps dedicate street to fallen Belleville soldier

Local historian Anthony Buccino joined family members and friends of Donald Baron Saunders to honor the fallen soldier with his name on the street sign where he lived. to Sept. 19, 2015

     We are here today to honor Pfc. Donald Saunders, a young man from this town, Belleville, from this street, High Street, from that house who answered his country’s call in a difficult time.

Pfc. Donald Saunders volunteered to go to South Vietnam with the Marines. He was killed in action while unselfishly exposing himself to the intense incoming fire of the enemy.
He loved his family. He loved his hometown. He loved his fellow Marines. He loved his country.

Here, today, we post this marker, this memorial to one of Belleville’s best, Belleville’s bravest.

We salute you, Pfc. Donald Baron Saunders.

We will not forget you or the 158 other Belleville sons who paid for our freedom with your lives.

Independence Day - Belleville, N.J.

Anthony Buccino was asked to speak at the Belleville Historical Society's annual 4th of July morning ceremony in the cemetery of the old Belleville Dutch Reformed Church on the corner of Main and Rutgers streets, Belleville, N.J. More than 65 veterans of the American Revolution are buried in the small cemetery.

Buccino and Nutley Commissioner Steve Rogers, both Belleville-raised, were selected to raise the American   flag near the resting place of Captain Henry Benson who died of his wounds in the Civil War 151 years ago.

Buccino's Remarks

"237 years ago The Declaration of Independence set our country's course. We cherish our freedom. Sometimes we take it for granted. But freedom is not free.

Our sons, brothers, uncles and daughters have fought through generations to preserve this country.

Around us are the graves of more than 65 American Revolution veterans, including that of Henry Brown who perished at Valley Forge. And one of three Civil War casualties, Captain Henry Benson.
