Nutley Author Anthony Buccino Reflects on Nutley Notable Ruth Bedford

By TAPINTO NUTLEY STAFF
August 20, 2019 at 12:12 AM

NUTLEY, NJ - As news of the passing of Nutley Matriach Ruth Bedford spread through the community, residents immediately shared their memories of her and her philantrophy. Nutley author Anthony Buccio took from his day to share his thoughts on Bedford, as well has a page from his book Nutley Notables.

"Mrs. Ruth Bedford was a sweet soul and treated everyone equally." said Buccino. "She'd share her stories of working for W.T. Grant or open her home for many local fund raisers. While her stately home reflected her wealth, her open heart reflected her love for Nutley and all of its people. I raise a lollipop in her honor." he added.

Anthony's World - Spring Update

Opt in to receive Anthony’s World Updates.
We’ll be short and only when there’s news to share or update.

1.    Belleville Sons Honor Roll
The project that began more than 15 years ago, to identify and remember the fallen soldiers from Belleville, N.J., is having long-term effects. In the past 13 months, Belleville has dedicated 21 street signs to fallen soldiers from the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Vietnam War and the Cold War.

In 1999, the Belleville Liberty war memorial had a partial list of soldiers, sailors and Marines lost in service. In 2005, using the names of the fallen discovered in Buccino’s research, the town added more than 150 names, where there had been none, to its Belleville Veterans Memorial on Union Avenue.

Our research continues as we learn more information about these Belleville Sons from their families as we prepare to dedicate street signs in their memory. We have been using digitized military records, where available to enhance information on our web site and in updated print editions of Belleville Sons Honor Roll – Remembering the Men Who Paid for Our Freedom.

Additionally, Belleville street signs dedicated to honor the sacrifice of three town police officers and a fire captain killed in the line of duty were unveiled in November.

2.    Nutley Sons Honor Roll
Don’t tell anyone yet, but we are continuing in our effort to work with the powers-that-be in Nutley to dedicate streets signs for the 140 fallen Nutley Sons.  These signs would be based on research for Nutley Sons Honor Roll – Remembering the Men Who Paid for Our Freedom.

3.    Book Projects
You may be aware Anthony is juggling three book projects. One project is Nutley Notables Volume 2, the follow up to Nutley Notables - The Men and Women Who Made a Memorable Impact on Our Home Town, Nutley, New Jersey. Another project involves research into murder, mayhem and major crime in a typical north Jersey town. And the third book is that Mosquito Man book simmering on a back burner.

4.    Other Stuff
Anthony continues to shoot photographs around town during his walks. There’s a Facebook page for that. He also created a Facebook group for Nutleyphotos, old and new. He also moderates Belleville and Nutley groups.

Anthony also maintains the websites and Facebook groups for Kingsland Manor and the Nutley Historical Society.

Don’t forget, books make great gifts for moms, grads, and dads. Anthony’s books are all available on Amazon.

Well, that’s it for this issue of Anthony’s World Update. Follow Anthony’s World on Facebook and Twitter. For anyone who’s read this far, check out this page of links where can read many of Anthony’s online pieces and perhaps pique your interest in one of his books you haven’t yet read.

Here's how it began:

NUTLEY – The prolific Anthony Buccino (15 books and counting) has just published his latest work: “Nutley Notables,” profiling more than 150 “Men and Women Who Made a Memorable Impact on Our Hometown.”
Included, of course, is Annie Oakley, whom everyone in Nutley knows once lived here. (Yes, outlanders, she did!)
Almost everyone in Nutley knows that this was the hometown of Martha Kostyra, now Martha Stewart.
But do you know about Frances Goodrich? Or Uncle Fred? Or Grumpy the Clown?
You can meet them, along with political leaders, military heroes, businessmen, scientists, athletes, artists, writers, et al., in the pages of “Nutley Notables.” And you may be surprised at the wide array of talents who called this tree-shaded town home. Or as Buccino describes Nutley: the kind of place “Norman Rockwell only dreamed of illustrating.” ...

Notables Talk Set for Nutley Museum on March 19

Nutley Historical Society

7 PM Thursday, March 19

NUTLEY N.J. -- Local author Anthony Buccino will speak about his latest book, Nutley Notables: The men and women who made a memorable impact on our home town, Nutley, New Jersey, at the Nutley Historical Society meeting in March.

Buccino says Nutley Historical Society support was instrumental in bringing the Nutley Notables book to fruition.

The author has set aside for the Nutley Museum one volume for as many as possible of the Notables to sign and it will be archived in the museum's special collection.

Notables profiled in the book are invited to the talk and will be asked to autograph an archive copy for the museum. Anyone with copies of the book are also invited to collect Notables signatures, too.

More than one dozen Notables have already signed the copy and this special copy will be on hand at all Buccino's talks this year.

"The society was approached by a major publisher about the Legendary Locals of Nutley project and I volunteered to be the liaison between the group and the publisher," Buccino said.

"We compiled hundreds of photos from archives of the museum and the Nutley Public Library. The photos were scanned and submitted to the publisher who said the photo quality did not meet their standards," the author said.

"Well, by that time, I had put in a few months on the project and gathered research on so many fine people in town -- many I had never known but who had done amazing things -- that I decided to continue the project on  my own and publish it through Cherry Blossom Press," Buccino explained.

At the NHS meeting in March, Buccino will talk about the historical and current figures profiled in his new book and also solicit suggestions from attendees for notable Nutley profiles to include in volume two of the local history collection.

"This volume has about 200 Nutley notables profiled and I already have a list for volume two. That list is about six pages and I'm going to look up every name and see just how notable they are," Buccino said.

Buccino Speaks to Old Guard on Friday

Local historian Anthony Buccino
will meet with the Old Guard
at 9 a.m. on Friday, January 23, 2015

NUTLEY N.J. -- Local author Anthony Buccino will speak about his latest book, Nutley Notables: The men and women who made a memorable impact on our home town, Nutley, New Jersey, to the Nutley Old Guard at 9 a.m. on Friday, January 23, at the Frank A. Cocchiola Parks and Recreation Building, 44 Park Avenue, Nutley, N.J.

Buccino will talk about the historical and current figures profiled in his new book and also solicit from the crowd suggestions for notable Nutley profiles to include in volume two of the local history collection.

The author says he will ask more questions than he answers on Friday because of the immense local history the members of the Old Guard hold and share among themselves is enormous.

Buccino is aware that many Old Guard members personally knew many of the past century's Nutley notables. In fact, at least two Old Guard members are already Nutley Notables and are profiled in his new book. You'll just have to stop by the meeting to learn who they are.

Founded in 1947, the Nutley Old Guard is open to men 55 or older who are either retired or semi-retired. The purpose is to provide fellowship and activities, which enrich one’s life. There are no military, religious or political connections. They meet every Friday at the Parks and Recreation Department.

Nutley opinion: Author and his subjects to sign book

BY VICTORIA CHALK
NUTLEY SUN

I’ve received a few acknowledgements of my alleged worth over the years, ranging from applause for one of several bands I have sung in, or for a play I’ve been in or directed, to a couple of awards from the New Jersey Press Association for this column.

However, I am especially tickled to have been included in Anthony Buccino’s latest book, "Nutley Notables." Perhaps "notorious" would be a more accurate adjective for some of us being bestowed with this honor, so the term "notable" is flattering.

The book, one of more than 15 penned by Buccino, contains photos and biographies of almost 200 people who have somehow helped shape our little town during the years. All kinds of people can be found in its pages, including the famous and not so famous. ...
