BOOK TALK: WW2 Letters Home from the South Pacific

WW2 Letters Home From The South Pacific by Angelo Buccino

Nutley-Belleville Old Guard, 9 a.m., Friday, June 14, 2019

Historian Anthony Buccino will meet with the Nutley Old Guard at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 14, to discuss his dad's letters home from the South Pacific during World War Two.

WW2 Letters Home from the South Pacific by Angelo Buccino is one GI’s view of the war amid the heat, bugs, carnage and noise in an artillery battalion supporting First Marine Division at Guadalcanal and other islands that never get mentioned.

Buccino wrote these long-lost letters to his best friend back in the states asking about the old gang. They turned up nearly sixty years after they were mailed, censored, read by his buddy and then found again in a forgotten footlocker in his old friend’s attic.

Hear the whole story of their discovery, the words of a young man far from home, and why they were published in November 2018.

The Old Guard of N.J., Nutley Chapter No. 7, meets weekly on Friday at 9 a.m. at the Frank A. Cocchiola Parks Building, 44 Park Avenue, Nutley, NJ.

New members always welcomed. Stop in at any Friday meeting and say hello.

Anthony Buccino, Preserving Nutley’s Place in History, an interview, was published in the Voices of Nutley site by NutleyKia.

Walk and Talk with the Author
Anthony Buccino led the successful Walk & Talk through Nutley parks in July. Anthony discussed Nutley history, the Nutley Sons Honor Roll, and growing up near these parks in the 1960s. Many of the views along the walk revisit photos in NUTLEY SNAPSHOTS.

Did you know Buccino created and maintained web sites for Nutley Historical Society and the Kingsland Manor for more than a dozen years? That helped him talk history on the Walk and Talk.

Well, that’s it for this issue of Anthony’s World Update

Buccino Speaks to Old Guard on Friday

Local historian Anthony Buccino
will meet with the Old Guard
at 9 a.m. on Friday, January 23, 2015

NUTLEY N.J. -- Local author Anthony Buccino will speak about his latest book, Nutley Notables: The men and women who made a memorable impact on our home town, Nutley, New Jersey, to the Nutley Old Guard at 9 a.m. on Friday, January 23, at the Frank A. Cocchiola Parks and Recreation Building, 44 Park Avenue, Nutley, N.J.

Buccino will talk about the historical and current figures profiled in his new book and also solicit from the crowd suggestions for notable Nutley profiles to include in volume two of the local history collection.

The author says he will ask more questions than he answers on Friday because of the immense local history the members of the Old Guard hold and share among themselves is enormous.

Buccino is aware that many Old Guard members personally knew many of the past century's Nutley notables. In fact, at least two Old Guard members are already Nutley Notables and are profiled in his new book. You'll just have to stop by the meeting to learn who they are.

Founded in 1947, the Nutley Old Guard is open to men 55 or older who are either retired or semi-retired. The purpose is to provide fellowship and activities, which enrich one’s life. There are no military, religious or political connections. They meet every Friday at the Parks and Recreation Department.

Buccino Publishes Nutley Notables Profile Collection

A New Book for Nutley History Lovers

Nutley Notables: The Men and Women Who Made a Memorable Impact on Our Home Town, Nutley, New Jersey

by Anthony Buccino

Nutley writer and author Anthony Buccino has published Nutley Notables, the Men and Women Who Made a Memorable Impact on Our Home Town, Nutley, New Jersey.

Buccino published more than fifteen books including four essay collections, three military history books and seven full-length poetry collections.  He has been called ' “New Jersey’s ‘Garrison Keillor” or something to that effect.’ His poem  At The Vet has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize.

The township of Nutley, New Jersey, has accumulated a wealth of celebrated and eccentric people who over-shadowed the salt-of-the-earth folks who lived here, raised their families and built the town into the place that Norman Rockwell only dreamed of illustrating for the cover of the  Saturday Evening Post. This new book profile nearly 200 townsfolks,  some you may know and many you will not forget.
