Notables Talk Set for Nutley Museum on March 19
Nutley Historical Society
65 Church Street, Nutley NJ
7 PM Thursday, March 19
NUTLEY N.J. -- Local author Anthony Buccino will speak about his latest book, Nutley Notables: The men and women who made a memorable impact on our home town, Nutley, New Jersey, at the Nutley Historical Society meeting in March.Buccino says Nutley Historical Society support was instrumental in bringing the Nutley Notables book to fruition.
The author has set aside for the Nutley Museum one volume for as many as possible of the Notables to sign and it will be archived in the museum's special collection.
Notables profiled in the book are invited to the talk and will be asked to autograph an archive copy for the museum. Anyone with copies of the book are also invited to collect Notables signatures, too.
More than one dozen Notables have already signed the copy and this special copy will be on hand at all Buccino's talks this year.
"The society was approached by a major publisher about the Legendary Locals of Nutley project and I volunteered to be the liaison between the group and the publisher," Buccino said.
"We compiled hundreds of photos from archives of the museum and the Nutley Public Library. The photos were scanned and submitted to the publisher who said the photo quality did not meet their standards," the author said.
"Well, by that time, I had put in a few months on the project and gathered research on so many fine people in town -- many I had never known but who had done amazing things -- that I decided to continue the project on my own and publish it through Cherry Blossom Press," Buccino explained.

"This volume has about 200 Nutley notables profiled and I already have a list for volume two. That list is about six pages and I'm going to look up every name and see just how notable they are," Buccino said.
Have your copy signed and/or buy copies to have signed. PLUS We're inviting everyone profiled in the book to stop by and autograph their profile page.
We'll also have Buccino's books on hand copies for sale.
The event is free and open to the public. All members of the Nutley Historical Society are invited to attend.

OBSERVER: Meet Nutley's 'Notables'
By Karen Zautyk
Observer Correspondent
NUTLEY –
The prolific Anthony Buccino (15 books and counting) has just published his latest work: “Nutley Notables,” profiling more than 150 “Men and Women Who Made a Memorable Impact on Our Hometown.”
Included, of course, is Annie Oakley, whom everyone in Nutley knows once lived here. (Yes, outlanders, she did!)
Almost everyone in Nutley knows that this was the hometown of Martha Kostyra, now Martha Stewart.
But do you know about Frances Goodrich? Or Uncle Fred? Or Grumpy the Clown?
You can meet them, along with political leaders, military heroes, businessmen, scientists, athletes, artists, writers, et al., in the pages of “Nutley Notables.” And you may be surprised at the wide array of talents who called this tree-shaded town home. Or as Buccino describes Nutley: the kind of place “Norman Rockwell only dreamed of illustrating.”

A New Book for Nutley History Lovers
Nutley Notables: The Men and Women Who Made a Memorable Impact on Our Home Town, Nutley, New Jersey
by Anthony Buccino
Nutley writer and author Anthony Buccino has published Nutley Notables, the Men and Women Who Made a Memorable Impact on Our Home Town, Nutley, New Jersey.
Buccino
published more than fifteen books including four essay collections, three
military history books and seven full-length poetry collections. He has been called ' “New Jersey’s ‘Garrison
Keillor” or something to that effect.’ His poem
At The Vet has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize.
The
township of Nutley, New Jersey, has accumulated a wealth of celebrated and
eccentric people who over-shadowed the salt-of-the-earth folks who lived here,
raised their families and built the town into the place that Norman Rockwell
only dreamed of illustrating for the cover of the Saturday Evening Post. This new book profile
nearly 200 townsfolks, some you may know and many you will not
forget.

YOUNTAKAH COUNTRY now on Kindle
YOUNTAKAH COUNTRY
A Poetic View of Nutley, Old and New
[Kindle Edition]
Cherry Blossom Press presents YOUNTAKAH COUNTRY A Poetic View Of Nutley Old And New by Nutley writer Anthony Buccino.
Buccino's own take on the township mixes history, tales and observations in a rich mix of what may or may not be the true history of Annie Oakley, the ITT tower, Leni Lenape, a Valium breeze, not to mention the Velodrome and the headless rider or the parlous water that rage through town on rainy days.
Knowing some of Nutley's history, readers will appreciate the twists and turns and maybe even learn something about the quiet little "Norman Rockwell town" in northern New Jersey.
For instance, did you know that the quiet little river that runs through Nutley was called Yountakah by Lenni Lenape, and so was their annual autumn feast - a predecessor to the Pilgrims' Thanksgiving? The name was also used by a large country club and golf course that bordered the Passaic River in town.
Buccino's verse also tackles a few local customs, including the senior high grads swimming in pool across town, and the rite of crossing the perilous rail overpass at Memorial Park.
And, of course, Buccino would never write about Nutley without homage to the men who paid the price for our freedom. Four poems recall the men who died in service and the veterans who lived in town and made it what it is today.
In other nostalgic verse, Buccino recalls summers at Booth Park, ice skating at ITT tower, school air raid drills at Holy Family School, pieces of an airplane landing on a Nutley lawn one night, the Nutley Museum and the Nutley Little Theatre.
Buccino weaves his poem Wonderful Life around Frances Goodrich, who grew up in town and went on to write the “Thin Man” film series and later won a Pulitzer Prize for the play “The Diary of Anne Frank.”
Buccino’s poem suggests Goodrich’s screenplay for the popular Christmas film “It’s A Wonderful Life” has hints of old Nutley, and that the scene of the angel and George on the bridge may have been inspired by the Lyndhurst bridge over the Passaic River, not far from where Goodrich grew up.
In recalling Nutley of about 100 years ago, Buccino cites Guthrie’s Dry Good Store and some of our famous residents and visitors, including Mark Twain, Annie Oakley and Richard Stockton lining up for that new invention called ice cream.
Goodrich was inducted into the Nutley Hall of Fame in 2005. Buccino stood in for the writer and her family at the ceremony.
